In a stunning poll from Gallup, 61 percent of Americans believe that neither the Democratic nor Republican parties does an adequate job governing the country, and that a third party is necessary.
The number is up 4 points since last year, and represents the highest total of Americans wanting a third party in the history of the poll.
Perhaps even more interesting is the largest number of independent voters (77%) said they wanted a third party that was centrist and focused on solutions, the highest in history, and a large percentage of Democrats and Republicans (close to 50% in both polls) also said they would like to see an active third party.
Changing political tone creates an opportunity for centrist, solutions-oriented independent candidates to defeat incumbent party candidates
These polling results help define the platform for independent candidates seeking office in 2018, and represent the best opportunity in nearly 40 years for independent candidates to win, and a centrist third-party to elect candidates to all levels of government.
