I love the experts saying that Manafort needs to start cooperating otherwise he may never get out of jail.
As referenced in the recent The Hill story (Watergate prosecutor says Manafort may never again ‘see the outside of a jail cell’), former Watergate prosecutor Nick Akerman said on Friday, “It could be the beginning of a life sentence. Paul Manafort, if he does not cooperate, may never ever see the outside of a jail cell.”
This, of course, begs the question: Cooperating about what?
Has it occurred to the so-called “experts” that Manafort was not involved in any collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign during the 2016 election, and knows nothing?
I am not a legal scholar, but even I know it is hard to give up what you don’t have.
The truth is – we can all agree that Paul Manafort is just a greedy bastard who took a ton of money consulting for Ukraine, failed to file the necessary paperwork, and tried to hide it from the IRS.
Let him rot in jail for a while.
In the meantime, the only plausible thing I can see here is that in his mind – the government is probably offering him a deal now that he can’t accept – in other words – more jail time than he thinks he is likely to receive following a trial, or more jail time than he thinks he deserves.
He’s probably thinking that when they go to trial, he can blow big holes into many of the government’s assertions, and gain some leverage for a lesser sentence or beat the rap entirely.
Why else go to trial?
For the government, this case has to give them some serious headaches. Apart from some of the financial dealings, there does not appear to be a lot there. They have been given the benefit of the doubt on a lot of motions and assertions thus far – but even the witness tampering charges are incredibly thin in evidence.
And let’s not forget one of the most important details: Manafort is not charged with ANY crime relating to the 2016 election… And he is the biggest fish Mueller has caught thus far.
Lastly, the funny thing in all this to me is this… the ONLY reason Paul Manafort was hired (really) was to lead the campaign for a short while into the Republican Convention. And he was only hired for that job, because nobody else wanted to work for the campaign, which many thought was too crazy, extreme, or a total sinking ship headed for a big election loss. And it was that job that put him into legal cross-hairs.
If people remember the drama around the GOP Convention, there was a great need to fight back the #NeverTrump challenges, and the Ted Cruz effort against Trump, and run a tight ship. Manafort actually delivered the tightly run ship, stopped dead any threats to Trump’s nomination, and by all accounts, it was a great Convention for Trump.
Once the GOP Convention was over – Manafort was gone.
I’m sure if Manafort could do it all over again, he would pass on the job like everyone else before him.
Running the Trump campaign is the ONLY reason the government went after him.
When you think about it, if Paul Manafort passes on running the Trump campaign, he’d still be collecting checks from Ukraine today.
